Hellebore
This is a picture from last year. But this hellebore should be in bloom by April.

As soon as the snow disappears from the shade gardens, the leaves of the hellebore are obvious. They are evergreen, big and dark green and leathery and they will be lying prostrate on the ground, looking very much the worse for winter. I will cut them off close to the ground at the base of the stem. I cut carefully, because, if I've been too long about it, coddled inside will be the emerging blossoms and new leaves.

The flowers begin here in March or April and emerge from fascinating, balloon-like buds. The frosts and snows of late spring do not bother them - this is when they are at their loveliest. The flowers will remain effective until the end of June. Seed heads are attractive for another month. The leaves are always beautiful.

Yellow Ladies Slipper
CYPRIPREDIUM calceolus var. pubescens
Expect to see this native orchid blooming here sometime in June. It's very showy, and very particular about how and where it grows. This picture is from a nursery propagated and garden-planted specimen.

We have stands of it in our forest. Never pick the flowers and never dig the plants out of the bush.  Transplants will often flourish for a period of time, and then die suddenly. (Sorry about the sermon, but it really is important.)

Tulips
We are hopelessly and dotingly devoted to tulips.  The show will begin as soon as spring breaks and will continue for several weeks.
We plant thousands of bulbs each fall and hope you will come and enjoy the show!
