Deep purple flower heads 10"-12" in diameter tower above short, thick stalks, like purple flying saucers, come down to earth to take a look. This is one of the biggest of the flowering onions. Each head consists of hundreds of star-shaped flowers, so it's always worth a look up close. Two or three strap-like leaves. Blooms for about three weeks in late spring to early summer. One of the most persistent of our flowering onions - the bulbs I planted 10 years ago still bloom every year, along with their progeny.
